This is what we were asked at my first Humanities lecture in college.
Along with, "How do you know we're not dreaming?"
I opened my mouth to answer, expecting the words to come out but they didn't. The answer wasn't easy to find. There is no way to truly prove this. We could be in the Matrix, we could be existing in a world that appears to be our world but isn't, we could be dreaming...
Let's take it a step further, how do we know that we're living on a planet that's our own? What if there are ten other yous? How would you know that you were the original? This was discussed in the book "Dark Matter" by Blake Crouch and it makes you question reality itself.
Part of reading and writing is expanding your thinking and questioning the things around you.
Open up your mind, try not to be as passive and look at things from different perspectives. It will help you understand yourself and others. You'll write better stories and read more books.
So go ahead, get lost in a book, in a different world and think about all the endless books you can read and the things you can write.
Open up your imagination.
What do you think? How do you know we're truly existing? How can you prove it?
